78 years ago on January 27, the German death camp Auschwitz was liberated by the Allied powers. This former camp that lies in southern Poland has become one of the world’s largest standing examples of evil. For it was at this death camp that 1.1 million of the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust were murdered by German henchmen. Today, Auschwitz survivors honor the anniversary as Europe is once again tormented by war. The former Auschwitz camp only lies 185 miles from the destruction of Russian forces in Ukraine. According to NBC news, survivors of Auschwitz are traumatized by the images of war that they see from Ukraine. On the other hand, Putin supposedly has his reasons to invade Ukraine. The Times of Israel states that Putin has named “the denazification of Ukraine” as one of his reasons for invading Kyiv nearly a year ago. Putin is allegedly fighting against the same evil that his country along with the Allies triumphed over 78 years ago. The Ukraine government, along with other world leaders, have blasted these claims made by Putin. Nonetheless, war continues to wage in Europe on the anniversary of one of the most triumphant days of World War II.
