With the start of this new school year comes new rules, one of which is the greatly dreaded phone ban. The law, or Act 185, requires each school corporation and charter school to: “(1) adopt and implement a wireless communication device policy that governs student use of a wireless communication device; and (2) publish the policy on the school corporation’s or charter school’s website” (“Senate Bill 185”, 2024). While the law was enacted in March by Govenor Eric Holcomb, Carmel Clay Schools has just begun exercising this rule within its school.
According to Michael Beresford, Carmel’s superintendent, not much is expected to change. Phones are not allowed in classrooms during instructional time. However, they are still allowed during the passing periods, lunch and can be allowed during class time with their teacher’s permission. The reaction to this is largely negative, with many concerned about students’ communications with their parents.
