There is a striking number of geese located all around cities surrounding Indianapolis. It is estimated that this number will continue to grow if it is not contained. They can be a major disruption due to their tutorial behavior, droppings, and potential damage to lawns and water sources. If you’re looking for ways to deal with these geese you can use decoys. Noisemakers, or trained dogs can discourage geese from settling. You can also turn to professional removal if geese become too aggressive or damaging, you may need to contact wildlife control professionals. Due to reduced predators, the number of geese will continue to grow.
Editor note: It is illegal to harm geese, their eggs, or their nests in the United States without permission from the U.S. Fish and Wild Service. Geese may be harassed or scared away without a permit as long as the geese, goslings, eggs, and nests are not harmed. Injuring a goose in any way is a violation of Federal Law.

This story paints a negative picture of Canada Geese. And while I appreciate that we are all reminded they are protected, I think it’s important to remember that Canada Geese are a federally protected bird because they were on the brink of extinction at the turn of the 20th century. That really wasn’t that long ago, and without laws to protect them we wouldn’t have them any more. So I think we should see them in a more positive light, and remember they didn’t build residential neighborhoods over the wetlands the geese call home- we did.
Also, it is a misconception that goose droppings are harmful, when in fact it is perfectly safe to use it on your vegetable garden, adding phosphorous and nitrogen to the soil as a natural fertilizer.
And remember if you want to try to discourage geese from living by you, yes you may annoy them from afar, but it is illegal to touch them, break their eggs, or let your dog loose to bit them, or hit them with your car. Any of these actions can result in large fines and/ or jail time.
So when you see Canada Geese enjoy the fact they are still here- and not just something we see in a natural history museum. They are a beautiful bird, and lot of fun to watch.
