On September 3rd, 2024, Indiana Governor Eric J. Holcomb proclaimed the week of September 14th as India’s Rajbhasha Hindi Awareness Week.
Hindi is an official language of India, and the official language of 9 of 28 states in India. It is spoken by about 615 million people throughout the world, and is the third most-spoken language when combined with those who speak it as a second-language.
The International Hindi Association-Indiana Chapter hosted its celebration of the 75th Hindi Diwas, Hindi week, on September 14th. The proclamation was read at the event, celebrating the official recognition of the language in Indiana.
The creation of this week is consequential for the awareness of the Hindi language, and is important in the midst of ongoing efforts to incorporate Hindi as a course in Indiana schools and universities.
