Luigi Mangione, the man who killed UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, Brian Thompson, was recently charged with murder. Mangione, a 26-year-old from Maryland, was arrested by police in Altoona, Pennsylvania, for gun charges ahead of him being charged by the New York Police Department on Monday.
The New York Police Department has also charged him for criminal possession of a weapon, possession of a loaded firearm, and possession of a forged instrument. The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has confirmed the charges.
According to Michael R. Sisak and Mark Scolforo at APnews, The forged instrument is the fake NJ driver’s license he allegedly used to check into the hostel on the Upper West Side.
In Pennsylvania, Mangione was charged with five crimes, including carrying a gun without a license, forgery, falsely identifying himself to authorities and possessing “instruments of crime,” according to a criminal complaint.
The charging document alleges that Mangione lied about his identity to police and carried the ghost gun without a license.
On December 10, 2024, Mangione appeared in court. He reportedly struggled with deputies and shouted Tuesday while arriving for a court appearance in Pennsylvania. He emerged from the patrol car shouting insults to onlookers.
Mangione likely was motivated by his anger with what he called “parasitic” health insurance companies and a disdain for corporate greed, a law enforcement bulletin obtained by The Associated Press said. He wrote that the U.S. has the most expensive health care system in the world and that profits of major corporations continue to rise while “our life expectancy” does not, according to the bulletin, based on a review of his hand-written notes and social media posts.
Mangione referred to the unabomber as a “political revolutionary” and likely found inspiration from the unabomber.
