This past week has been eventful for politics around the world. From political upheaval, and passing of controversial bills to developments in plane crash investigations, the world stands on the cusp of change. A recently passed Iraqi bill for instance changes a law from 1959. According to CNN, the new law dictates that family policy falls under the jurisdiction of Islamic courts in a move that some say may legalize child marriage. Similarly, according to ABC news, El Salvador’s parliament too ratified a controversial bill, which makes reforming the constitution easier. Critics believe that this decision may give the current president and his already dominant political party a chance to claim even more power. Upheaval has been the mood of the week with Ahmed Al Shara, the leader of a rebel coalition, overthrowing the long-time dictator and claiming the title of interim president in Syria. Additionally, Nigeria faces security concerns of its own as the government officially declares the Jihadi Lakurawa group a terrorist organization. To top it all off, the ongoing investigation into the South Korean Jeju plane crash has taken a turn as it comes to light that the plane stopped recording about 4 minutes before it went down. American Airlines experienced its own plane crash over the Potomac, killing 64. President Trump has blamed the crash on former president Biden and DEI, hinting that it was the incompetence of “diversity” employees that facilitated the crash. International politics is experiencing a turbulent period here at the start of 2025 with changes and upheaval at every corner.
