23 years ago, on September 11, 2001, a series of tragic events occurred that claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans.
The attacks on 9/11 were orchestrated by Al Qaeda, a militant organization. Through months of planning, members working for the organization hijacked four domestic planes.
The first attack happened at 8:46 AM, when American Airlines Flight 11 was crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. 17 minutes later, United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the south tower. At 9:36 AM, American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon, in Washington D.C.
Brave passengers of United Airlines flight 93 thwarted hijacker attempt to cause greater destruction by crashing the plane in a field in Pennsylvania, at 10:03 AM. By 10:30 AM, both twin towers had collapsed.
The entire country mobilized to shut down major target buildings, and provide first responders to help with rescue for the victims. Over 400 first responders died that day, and a total of nearly 3,000 people perished in the attacks. Additionally, the number of first responders that die from illnesses resulting from exposure to toxins continues to increase, already greater than 370 just for the New York branch.
The impact of these events can be witnessed in conversations with any adults that were alive on that day. They can be seen in the security processes at the airport. They can be seen in the hearts of all Americans, and the entire world.
