Wildfires are ravaging Maui, and they started because of something unexpected. The fires began on August 8th, 2023, and were officially contained 4 days later, on August 12th, 2023, but Maui still feels the pressures the fire caused. The electric company “Hawaiin Electric” was accused of being the cause of these fires. “Defendants knew of the extreme fire danger that the high wind gusts posed to their overhead electrical infrastructure, particularly during red flag conditions,” the lawsuit said. Many poles had fallen beforehand and were exposed to dry vegetation. Despite all of this, Hawaiian Electric does not face the accusations. A statement was released saying that “Our primary focus in the wake of this unimaginable tragedy has been to do everything we can to support not just the people of Maui, but also Maui County,” the company’s statement said. “We are very disappointed that Maui County chose this litigious path while the investigation is still unfolding.” Maui still stands strong, as multiple organizations are working to keep the residents safe. Red Cross disaster teams are working 24/7 to help those in need. Over 21,000 emergency shelters have been provided to those in need.
