A new bill was passed called the Senate Bill 78 in a 36-12 vote, making seven democrats and five republicans who voted against the law. It is now being sent to governor Mike Braun which would make it an official law.
What does this mean for students?
This law would enforce a “bell-to-bell” limit on phones, meaning students wouldn’t be allowed to use their phone from the start of school until dismissal. This doesn’t only involve phones but includes smart watches, video game devices, and any personal devices such as laptops and iPads. There are some exceptions to these rules for students who need and rely on their devices for medical reasons. These devices would either have to be left at home, put in lockers, or schools could use a locked pouch to hide phones that only staff can open. This law was proposed to prevent distractions in classrooms so students can focus on school and their grades and if passed, will be enforced in schools by next year.
