After months of preparation, sacrifice, and relentless dedication, Carmel High School’s Mock Trial team has officially claimed the State Championship title, marking a defining moment for the program.
The team entered the season with determination but not necessarily with the expectations of winning a state title. Carmel has long been competitive in the Mock Trial industry, but the championship wasn’t something they assumed would be a view.
I interviewed Aenea Wells, a Mock Trial and Carmel High School Sophomore student. Let’s see how her feelings are about it.
“We hadn’t really even considered the fact that we might make it… we haven’t really been state champion.” “We had put in so much work since October. I’ve done the Mock Trial since last year, and other members of my team have been doing it all four years.” Aenea said. That mindset may have been what led to their success. Instead of pressure, the team focused on preparation and it paid off big time to win a state championship. The team had even joked about making it far in the competition and winning in general, “We had been joking about making it to nationals or even making it to state finals and then we did.” says Aenea. Even after the win, the moment hasn’t fully sunk in. “I don’t think it still hasn’t really hit me yet… it doesn’t feel real yet.” The road to the championship wasn’t easy. Aenea described the personal sacrifices required to compete at such a high level. Aenea: “Our team made lots of sacrifices. I had to give up fencing practices. I had to give up a bunch of other stuff… studying time.” Those sacrifices ultimately paid off, culminating in a title that reflects both individual commitment and team unity.
While many teams struggle with chemistry, Carmel’s strength came from how well they worked together. “Our team was really compatible and we got along with each other really well.” said Aena. That connection allowed them to overcome challenges smoothly throughout the season. “We all got along so well that we just ended up figuring things out.” With some members graduating and heading off to college, this victory marks both an ending and a beginning. “Some of them are going on to college now.”
As Carmel celebrates its championship, and the legacy of this team, their journey will likely inspire future competitors. For Aenea and her teammates, the title is more than just a win, it’s proof that hard work, teamwork, and belief can turn even a “joke” into reality.
Mock Trial is now going to regionals and hoping to win even more.
